Preview your thumbnail on mobile first

YouTube's own A/B test only works after you publish. Here's how to check your thumbnail on a phone before it goes live, and what to look for.

Three ways to preview on a phone

    1. Use a preview tool. Upload your image to the Thumbnail Preview tool and switch to the mobile and Shorts views. Open it on your phone for the real feel.
    2. Send it to yourself. Message the image to your phone and look at it zoomed out to a small size.
    3. Compare with competitors. Put your design next to a top video in your niche with the A/B compare tool.

    Mobile checklist

    • Can you read the text in one second?
    • Is the face or subject clear, with a readable expression?
    • Does it stand out in both light and dark mode?
    • Is anything important hidden under the duration badge? (See safe zones.)
    • If it shows in Shorts, does the centre 9:16 crop still work?
    • Does it promise the same thing as your title?

    After you publish

Use YouTube Studio's Test & Compare to try thumbnail variants on real viewers. A quick mobile check first means you're only testing designs that are already readable.
