How big should thumbnail text be?
Most people see your thumbnail on a phone, where it can be just a few centimetres wide. Text that looks huge in your editor can turn into a smudge. Here's how to size it.

Rules of thumb
- Few words. Aim for about three to five words. The title already carries the detail.
- Tall letters. Make the letters at least about a sixth of the image height. If in doubt, go bigger.
- Heavy fonts. Bold, condensed sans-serif fonts survive shrinking. Thin and script fonts don't.
- Strong contrast. Light text on dark, or dark on light, with an outline or shadow if the background is busy.
- Don't repeat the title. Add a hook the title doesn't say.
The squint test
Shrink your thumbnail to the width of a phone search result, or step back from your screen and squint. If you can't read the words in a second, they're too small or too low-contrast.
Watch the corners
The bottom-right corner is covered by the duration badge. See the safe zones guide before placing text.
